Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 stick butter (1/2 cup)
  • 4 tsp baking powder
  • 4 tsp sugar
  • 2 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C).
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
  3. Add Buttermilk: Stir in the buttermilk until a moist dough forms.
  4. Melt Butter: Melt butter in a microwave-safe bowl. Pour into an 8×8 or 9×9 baking dish. (Be sure to use a dish that’s not too small or shallow, so the butter doesn’t spill over while baking.)
  5. Spread Dough: Place the dough directly on top of the melted butter. Use a spatula to spread it evenly until it touches the sides of the dish.
  6. Score the Dough: Cut the unbaked dough (which should be swimming in butter) into 9 even-ish squares.
  7. Bake: Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
  8. Serve: Slice along the scored lines and enjoy warm.

Tips & Variations

  • For extra flavor, sprinkle shredded cheddar and garlic powder on top before baking.
  • Try using self-rising flour and adjust baking powder/salt accordingly.
  • Add a drizzle of honey or jam when serving for a sweet touch.

Serving Suggestions

These biscuits are perfect alongside soups, stews, fried chicken, or breakfast spreads. The buttery crust makes them so irresistible, you may want to double the recipe!
